Discovering my passion for healthcare during the HSM 2025 Bootcamp

Student with Kate

Thomas Andrew Hutton, Weekend MBA, 2026

This week, I had the privilege of participating in the Fuqua School of Business Health Sector Management Boot Camp. I am especially grateful to my fellow WEMBA classmates, who encouraged me to participate in this experience. Your support encouraged me to step into an area I didn’t realize I had a passion for. I couldn’t have asked for a better start.

The boot camp was an incredible opportunity to meet and learn from leaders across the healthcare industry who volunteered their time to teach, mentor, and shape the future of this field, covering topics from the structure of healthcare to building a more efficient healthcare system, data privacy, understanding device and pharmaceutical development, and strategies for leading healthcare into the future.

Healthcare resonates with my values because it encompasses more than just business. It is about people. It is about making decisions that protect access, maintain quality, and control costs so that patients receive the care they need. It is about responsibility, balancing operational excellence with human impact.

With rising expenses, increasing demand, and an aging population resulting from longer life expectancy, the stakes have never been higher. The ability to deliver care efficiently and effectively, while sustaining growth, is essential. This experience reinforced why that work matters and why leaders must approach it with purpose and discipline.

Bootcamp Class

Thank you to my amazing teammates from the Weekend Executive MBA ’26 and 2’7 programs. I’m blessed to be 4 out of 4 for landing on amazing teams filled with high-performing, intelligent, and impactful individuals.

Thank you to the program staff and professors, Kate Miller, Ruth Tolman, JoAnne Goodwyn, and Sherry Hightower, for organizing an exceptional boot camp. Thank you to Professor Peter Ubel, Professor David Ridley, and the HSM guest speakers who generously shared their knowledge and perspective. This was more than an introduction to the health sector. It was the beginning of a journey that aligns deeply with what I believe: service, impact, and creating systems that improve lives.
