HSM Certificate Requirements for Executive MBA

The Health Sector Management (HSM) curriculum takes a comprehensive approach to studying the full health care ecosystem, incorporating a range of supplementary events and programming to complement your Duke MBA coursework. These resources augment your knowledge and expertise in the health care field, making you an exceptional leader in various aspects of the health care industry. Eligible alumni and Executive MBA students take HSM courses in residency or via Fuqua’s distance learning platform with students from the Weekend Executive Program.
Duke MBA alumni are encouraged to pursue the Certificate for Health Sector Management at Fuqua! Prior experience in healthcare is not a prerequisite for obtaining the HSM Certificate. Numerous alumni utilize the resources of the Center for Health Sector Management and the HSM Certificate to transition into new career fields or to apply their expertise and insights within the broader healthcare landscape.
The certificate requires a total of six courses
- 3 required HSM courses
- 2 required Industry Context electives
- 1 Breadth elective
HSM Required Courses:
- Health Institutions, Systems, and Policy (HLTHMGMT 710) “HSM Bootcamp”
- Fundamentals of Health Sector Management: A Global Perspective (HLTHMGMT 705E, 706E, 707E) “HSM Seminar”
- HSM Project Course (HLTHMGMT 897E) – Conducted immediately following successful completion of HSM coursework.
HSM Industry Context Electives
Students must take two Industry Context electives, and then they will need to take one Breadth elective to fulfill the remaining requirement. Industry Context electives include:
- Health Care Markets (HLTHMGMT 711E)
- Life Science Strategy (HLTHMGMT 718E)
HSM Breadth Elective
One course must be an HSM Breadth Elective, from examples below:
- HLTHMGMT 716 (Week in DC): Management of Health Systems and Policy
- FINANCE 646E Corporate Finance
- MANAGEMT 745E Negotiation
- MARKETNG 796E Market Intelligence
- MARKETNG 807E Marketing Strategy
- MARKETNG 808E Strategy and Tactics of Pricing
- STRATEGY 840E Emerging Markets Strategy
- STRATEGY 838E Entrepreneurial Strategy for Innovation-Based Ventures
Dates: The HSM Breadth Elective classes are offered during the elective terms.
Tuition = HSM Certificate = six (6) courses x $2500 each = $15,000
Active Fuqua Executive MBA (EMBA) completing the HSM Certificate will be billed for three (3) HSM Required Courses. Elective courses are covered by the EMBA Program tuition at a rate of $2500 per Elective course (3 x $2500/Elective course = $7500). Therefore, the total cost for active Fuqua EMBA/HSM candidates would be $7500 …a savings of $7500!
Fuqua Alumni or previous Fuqua HSM candidates who have initiated HSM coursework can resume pursuing the HSM Certificate without repeating completed courses, provided they restart the HSM courses within three (3) years.
HSM tuition is not eligible for coverage by federal student loans.

AMA CME (Continuing Medical Education) Direct Credit Program for Fuqua MBA/HSM Students
Physicians who earn the Fuqua Health Sector Management (HSM) Certificate are eligible to earn 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ directly from the American Medical Association (AMA). Physician students who complete the HSM Certificate program courses immediately following completion of core MBA courses – with no lapse in continuity – are eligible for this CME opportunity from the AMA.
To apply for credit, students must complete the direct credit application and submit a copy of their Fuqua transcript along with the appropriate processing fee after completing the requirements for the HSM Certificate.
